One of the great things about my job is I can, more often than not, listen to the radio all day long as I work away. And somethings on the news really get my back up, but none more than this.
It seems that Birmingham City Council, run by Tories no less, has decided to ‘outsource’ their in house IT dept to INDIA! They are getting rid of 70 staff and giving the jobs to lower paid workers in India. Great for the computer whizzes in India, bad for public sector staff and the local area of Birmingham. And really great for Capita. Yep, it was the management firm Capita that gave them the idea and set it all up, and Capita makes a nice tidy profit from the deal. But 64pence from every pound earned by the staff in Brum getting the sack, will no longer be fed back into the Birmingham economy.
Now some clown on the radio today tried to justify this as a saving to the tax payer. So it must be a good thing. Sadly this cretin is just using Tory Spin to sell it, and thankfully there was a nice lady from Unite there to correct his shitty maths. You might decrease your IT and wage bill in the council by whatever amount, since it’s not been discussed just how much of a pittance they’ll pay the new staff out in Bombay or wherever, but now they’ll be paying for the sacked IT staff when they go on the dole. How is that saving the tax payer money?
This is where I get angry. It’s not saving the tax payer a fucking penny! Capita have the contract to provide the IT service to Birmingham City Council. They are the only ones that will see a saving in their costs. Because next time it comes round for contract renewal with Capita, it’ll go up in line with inflation plus a nice signing bonus for the bosses of Capita. It’s the latest in a round of stupid idiotic False Economy deals that allow private companies control of public services and suck tax payer money out of the economy.
Then the clown said something that made my blood boil. (Like it wasn’t already!) He reckons it’s not the councils job to be socially responsible and countries should be run more like private sector businesses. They have to go for the cheapest option possible. What a TWAT! A country is made up of the people, not the businesses that exist thanks to the people. People are not corporations. It’s thanks to corporations that food prices are sky rocketing. It’s thanks to corporations that house prices and rent is through the roof. Without decent wages, we cannot afford to live. We end up having to take on more debt just to afford to survive, and then they push up interest rates pushing us further into debt and making us slaves! We work to live, not live to work.
Backdoor privatisation has to stop now! Money is not infinite. If we continue to allow private companies to suck what little money we have left after the banks wiped £20 trillion out with the last economic disaster that THEY CAUSED, pretty soon we will all be slaves to the less than minimum required wage.
